| Mother Gooseというのは イギリスやアメリカで伝承されてきた童謡のことです。子守唄や遊び歌など色々な歌があります。
そんな外国の歌なんて良く分からないやって思っていても、日本でも結構身近だったりします。特に、英語育児に興味があるある方は、思わぬ数を知ってたりするかも・・・手持ちのＣＤがほとんどMother
Gooseだったって事もあるんじゃないでしょうか。「ああっ、これもMother
Gooseなのか」って感じですね。 「どうしてMother Gooseと呼ばれるようになったのか？」、「Mother GooseとNursery Rhymes って何？」って言うような詳しいことは＾￥」置いておき、「Mother Gooseこんなに身近なんだよ！」って言うページです。

普段ここまで歌うことは無いけれど、むちゃくちゃ長いです・・・幾つかのバージョンがあります。

鬼を決める唄では有名なものです。この唄を歌いながら各行４人ずつ順に指していき、最後のmoにあたった人が鬼(it)となります。「ひい、ふう、みい、よう」といった勘定言葉ですね。 |

左手の人差し指と右手の親指をあわせ、次に左手の親指と右手の人差し指を交互にあわせて登っていくという手遊びで、クモが雨どいを昇っていく様子を表します。小さい子供には、体をアマドイにみたてて指を這わせます。 |

| ◆「そして誰もいなくなった Ten Little Niggers（Indians）」 ”Ten little nigger boys went out to dine” | ||
| 超有名な代表作品です。１０人の男女がオーエンと名乗る１人の男から招待状を受け取り、孤島へやってくる。招待主は姿を見せないまま、歌の通りに１人づつ殺されていく。当初、”Ten
Little Niggers”となっていたこの歌は、蔑視語ということで”Ten
Little Indians”に変更されました。 Indianは良くて、Niggerがダメというところが、良く分からないんですが、そういう社会情勢だったのでしょう。もともと”Ten Little Indians”という数え歌があったので、少しややこしくなってしまいます。作品を読んだことが無ければ、こちらの数え歌と混同してしまう方もいるかもしれませんね。 作品中では、最後の少年も・・・「１人のインディアンの少年が後に残された 彼が首をくくり、後には誰もいなくなった」と、くら〜い歌になっています（全員が死にます）。ただ、クリスティーは最後の一人が結婚していなくなるバージョンも知っていたので舞台脚本では合わせて筋書きを変えています。 |

| 奇妙にねじれた家に住む、ひねくれた主人が毒殺された。主人は大富豪で、遺産は妻や子供、孫に配分される予定であったが、遺言書が行方不明に。登場人物が個性的で、意外なラストに驚かされます。 | ||

◆「ポケットにライ麦を A Pocket Full of Rye」 ”Sing A Song Of Six-Pence” 投資信託会社の社長が毒殺された。彼のポケットの中にはライ麦が詰められていた。ミス・マープルが口ずさんだマザー・グースのメロディ、その歌詞の中には今回の事件と符号する点が多く見つけられた。 ちなみに、つぐみパイは、つぐみ肉のパイではなく、パイを切ると中からつぐみが飛び出してくるという余興というか仕掛けのあるパイです。

| 普段同じメニューしか注文しない老人が黒イチゴのパイを注文する。その数日後、階段から落ちて死んでいるのを発見される。唄に沿ってストーリーが進むものではなく、黒イチゴパイをつぐみのパイに見立てているだけなんですけどね。 |

| 金持ちの叔母が自宅の食堂で文鎮で頭を殴られ殺害された。家族四人が容疑者に。王室勅選弁護士が探偵役の珍しい作品です。 |
| ◆「五匹の子豚 Five Little Pigs（Murder in Retrospect・米）」 ”Five Little Pigs” | ||
| １６年前の夫毒殺事件で有罪となり死亡した母親を持つカーラは、事件のの真相をポアロに解明するよう依頼する。母親が残した手紙には、自分が無罪であることを主張していたのだった。事件に関わった５人の容疑者の手記を通して真相を暴く。唄にあわせて容疑者が描写されています。 | ||

| ポワロが診察を受けた直後、歯医者は謎の自殺を遂げる。歯医者が発作的に自殺したものと思われたが、彼の秘書に対するいたずら、彼の治療をうけた女性の失踪など不審な事実が浮かび上がる。経済界の大物が、「自分は国家の重要人物である自分を守るために、平凡な人間を殺すことは正しいという異常な愛国心が気持ち悪いです。マザー・グースの童謡の展開に合わせ、事件が解決されていきます。 | ||

| 第二次対戦の最中、仕事にあぶれていたトミーの元へ情報局から仕事が降ってきた。スパイ「ＮかＭ」の正体を突き止めろという。但し妻タペンスには内緒で行なうことを条件とされた。しかし一人任地に赴くトミーを待っていたのはなんと変装したタペンスだった。果たしてこのホテルの住民のうち誰がＮまたはＭなのか？お互い他人のふりをしたまま調査をするトミーとタペンスが突き止めた正体は？ 探偵トミーに依頼された任務は、軍の要職についているドイツのスパイの正体を突き止めること。妻タペンスに秘密で任地に赴いたが、待っていたのは変装したタペンスだった。 |

| この唄の後半は後からつけたものなので、意味は良く分かりませんが、良くあることですね。「放り投げる」という部分は、元々はガガンボ（蚊トンボ）（daddy-longlegs）の足を子供がもぎとって放すときの唄です。 |

| 雪山の中の閉ざされた山荘で展開する、連続殺人。三人の虐待された子供の一人が大人になって復習する時を狙っている。 短編ではあるが、ほぼ同じ内容の戯曲「ねずみとり」は記録的なロングランになった。 |
